The Feed Is Not a Sample

{{first_name | みんな}}さん、こんにちは ☕

"Comparison is the thief of joy." Theodore Roosevelt. Except he never said it. 👀

Nobody can find an author. The earliest traces sit in 2003 and 2004, unsigned, and the Roosevelt attribution only turns up around 2012. The people who keep his archive list it among the things he did not say. 📌

So here we are. An issue about a feeling produced by things people posted, opening with a quote people posted.

Neither one had to be checked to spread.

Nobody is lying, and it is still not a sample

You saw the post. Eighteen months, N1, a photo of the certificate. You did the arithmetic on your own three years and came out slow. 🚪

We are not going to tell you that you are secretly doing fine. We have no idea whether you are. The feed is not the instrument to find out with.

And nobody is lying. The numbers in those posts are mostly true. They are just not a sample.

For a result to reach you, four things have to happen. It has to occur. Its owner has to notice it as postable, which mostly means unusual. They have to post it, and posting is rare: a small minority writes most of what we all read. Then a platform has to show it to you. ⚡

Four filters, each one selecting for the remarkable.

That argument is ours, by the way. We looked for a study that caught both the people who posted a timeline and the people who did not. There is none. And it does not all point one way: some rooms overrepresent triumph, others the people stuck. 🤝

That two-column chart of study hours from N5 to N1 is not published by the people who run the test. They publish can-do statements, not hours. The real figures belong to the old four-level exam that stopped existing in 2010: 150, 300, 600 and 900 hours. "N1 takes 900 hours" is a true number wearing the wrong label. 💡

A different race with the same finish line

Someone who grew up reading Chinese characters starts Japanese already holding several thousand shapes. A real head start, and it shows up in reading: one study found that group faster and stronger on kanji-heavy explanatory passages. 🎴

Now the half that never makes the argument. The same work found the advantage in reading and not in listening. In another study, the group with less kanji knowledge did better on pronunciation.

They did not skip anything. They started a different race with the same finish line, and along it they get 同形異義語(どうけいいぎご), words that look familiar and mean something else. 😅

And the rest of that category. Living in Japan. Studying full time. Another language already taken to fluency.

⚠️ Abunai 危(あぶ)ない

Here is what we will not claim. Looking at that post probably made you feel worse for an evening, and the research on upward comparison supports that, with modest effects. What it does not support is that the feeling slowed you down. Those studies measured how people rated themselves, not who quit. 🙌

Which is why the move is not "stop looking at other people". Visible peers are one of the few things that keep learners from drifting off. Change the comparison set, not the comparing: people you could stand beside next month, and your own last four weeks. 🎯

Then the boring levers, unchanged for decades. Spacing. Retrieval. Accumulated contact time. A review pulling together more than three hundred experiments found a solid advantage for spacing practice out over cramming it. 📝

This Issue's Japanese

Word

地道(じみち)Ordinary conversation. Mildly approving, common at work

Means: steady, patient, unspectacular and reliable. 📌

Use it: 地道(じみち)な努力(どりょく)steady effort · 地道(じみち)に続(つづ)ける to keep at it without drama.

Reading trap: not ちみち. 地 has two on-readings and this one takes ジ. Notice the shape too: 地 is an on-reading, 道(みち)a kun-reading, on first and kun second, which is 重箱読(じゅうばこよ)み. Not rendaku, and not its mirror 湯桶読(ゆとうよ)み. ⚡

Kanji 漢字

地

Meaning: ground, earth, land.

Grade: elementary, second year. Low grade, high yield.

Readings: チ · ジ · つち

Common words: 地図(ちず)map · 地下(ちか)underground · 地震(じしん)earthquake · 地味(じみ)plain

The good bit: you cannot predict チ or ジ from the meaning. 地面(じめん)takes ジ, 地上(ちじょう)takes チ, and both are the ground. Reference tables get that one wrong. 💪

This issue's connection: 地 is grade-two kanji for ground. 地道 is the road along the ground: no view, no shortcut, and the only one that reliably arrives. 👀

Renshuu Time 練習(れんしゅう)📝

「比(くら)べる相手(あいて)を替(か)える」. Change who you are standing next to. About fifteen minutes.

→ Write down the timeline that is bothering you. The post, the person, the number. One line.

→ Next to it, list what you do not know about them. Not to diminish them, to be accurate. Prior character knowledge, hours a day, living situation.

→ Now find three people roughly where you are. A study group, a class, anyone visibly mid-road rather than finished. Write the three names down. Not optional, and not "stop comparing".

→ Write your own last four weeks in numbers. Sessions, minutes, pages, conversations. If you track nothing, write that down too.

→ Set one target for the next four weeks. A number of sessions, plus one thing you will do with the language. Tell one of the three. 🎴

You will know you did it when: you can say in one sentence, without guessing, what you did in the last four weeks. Most of us cannot, which is why the feed gets to answer instead. 🎯

✨ Yatta やった

If you only got as far as the three names, keep them where you will see them. That is the step with the evidence behind it. 💡

The tiny win

The feed answers a question you never asked, with a sample nobody assembled. Your last four weeks answer the one you did ask. 自分(じぶん)なりのペース is not a consolation prize, it is the only pace that gets walked. 🍵

One reply back

Hit reply with the number from step four. Just the number, whatever it is.

We are collecting them, and the spread is going into a future issue. 🚪

Stay connected 🙌

We are around during the week if you want to talk shop, share a win, or just lurk. Both are completely fine.
