The Deadline Nobody Set

{{first_name | みんな}}さん、こんにちは ☕

Look up 腹(はら)を立(た)てる in a Japanese dictionary. It says 「怒る。立腹する。」

So you look up 立腹(りっぷく). It says 「はらをたてること。怒ること。」

So you look up 怒(おこ)る. It sends you straight back to 腹を立てる. 👀

Three steps, one closed circle, and the only plain-language answer is buried under two synonyms you also had to look up.

The dictionary is fine. So are you.

You can walk that loop yourself in thirty seconds, in one of the country's most respected dictionaries.

And the dictionary is working perfectly. 💡

A 国語辞典(こくごじてん)exists to remind, disambiguate and confirm for somebody who already owns the word, not to hand it to somebody who does not. When the definition is harder than the headword, that is not your reading level failing. It is a tool doing a job it was not designed for. 🎯

Which makes the next question worth asking properly.

Nobody ever said N2

We went looking for whoever decided you should switch to Japanese-only definitions at N2. 🔍

We could not find them.

The most-cited modern source calls the transition optional and gradual, triggered by whether you can read a basic definition. Not by a test. The older immersion writing describes the same drift with no exam level anywhere. One well-known guide puts readiness at roughly three thousand known words. Still not N2. 📌

So somewhere between "when you can read a definition" and a forum thread, a readiness check got laundered into a deadline. You have been carrying a due date that has no author. 😅

⚠️ Abunai 危(あぶ)ない

Much of the advice here is quietly out of date. goo辞書 shut down permanently in June 2025 and is still being recommended all over the internet. If the advice about which dictionary has been stale for over a year, the advice about when to switch deserves a second look. コトバンク is the strongest free replacement, and it labels every entry with its source. ⚡

Keep the English

Here is what the research actually says, because it gets misquoted constantly.

The study everyone cites compared three dictionary types. The combined kind, a Japanese-style definition plus an English gloss plus an example in one entry, beat the Japanese-only kind on both understanding and producing new words. It beat the English-only kind on understanding. On producing, those two finished dead level. And among learners already good with dictionaries, nothing beat anything. 📚

We should also tell you the awkward part: the largest review of this literature to date leans the other way, toward monolingual. It also pooled the combined and English-only formats into one bucket, so it cannot actually separate them. Nobody has settled this.

What nobody has managed in thirty years is to pin a cost on the English itself. Every study that can actually tell the two formats apart finds no penalty for leaving it there. 💪

☝️ Chotto ちょっと

We could not find a single controlled study of any of this for Japanese. Everything above comes from learners of English, in writing systems that do not hide how a word is pronounced. We think it transfers. We cannot prove it, and you should know which parts of this are evidence and which are our reading of it. 🙂

So: put the Japanese definition on top and the English underneath. Most pop-up dictionary tools let you set that order. You read the Japanese first because it is first, and you are never stranded, because the English is right there. That is the combined entry, assembled by hand. If you own a commercial dictionary file, import it; please do not go looking for pirated ones. 📖

Stop treating this as a switch you flip. Treat it as a ratio that drifts. Some words you will read in Japanese today. Most you will not. Both are normal.

This Issue's Japanese

Word

納得(なっとく)Neutral, everyday

Means: the click. The moment a meaning actually settles, rather than merely being translated. 📌

Use it: 納得(なっとく)できない, I am not convinced. 納得(なっとく)がいく, it adds up. 辞書(じしょ)を引(ひ)いても納得(なっとく)できないことがある。⚡

Why this one: an English gloss can hand you the meaning without the 納得. A Japanese definition you cannot parse hands you neither. 🎯

Kanji 漢字

典

Meaning: a standard, a code, a canonical work. The 典 in 辞典.

Reading to learn first: テン. There is no everyday kun reading, so nothing to switch between.

Common words: 古典(こてん)classics · 典型的(てんけいてき)typical · 出典(しゅってん)source · 特典(とくてん)bonus, on every product page in Japan

The one worth knowing: 辞典(じてん)and 事典(じてん)sound identical. A 辞典 explains words. A 事典 explains things. Nobody ever mentions this and it comes up constantly. 👀

Reading trap, free of charge: 納得 is なっとく, not のうとく. 納 is のう in 納入(のうにゅう)and 納税(のうぜい), but here it is なっ, the same なっ you already say ordering 納豆(なっとう). 🍵

Renshuu Time 練習(れんしゅう)📝

Fifteen minutes, a browser, nothing to install.

First, walk the circle. On コトバンク, read the デジタル大辞泉 entry for 腹を立てる, then 立腹, then 怒る, and watch the third hand you back to the first. Worth doing with your own eyes.

Then run your own five. Pick five words you met this week and half-know. Read only the Japanese definition, count how many words inside it you do not know, write the number down. Then look the word up in English.

The rule of thumb we use: if a Japanese definition costs you more than two unknown words, that word is not ready yet. Not you. Readiness is per word, not per person. 🎴

You will know you did it when: you can name the exact word that broke you, the one whose definition was harder than the word itself. That is your evidence that the ceiling is real and specific rather than a level you failed to reach. 🙌

✨ Yatta やった

Even if all five flattened you, you learned something: the problem was never your discipline. You were handed a tool built for somebody who already knew the answer.

The tiny win

There is no ceremony and no exam that unlocks it. There is just today's word, which is either ready or is not, and you are allowed to look.

One reply back

Hit reply with the word whose Japanese definition defeated you. The specific one.

We are collecting them, and the worst offenders go into a future issue. 👀

Stay connected 🙌

We are around during the week if you want to talk shop, share a win, or just lurk. Both are completely fine.
