See It, Hear It, Say の

{{first_name | みんな}}さん、こんにちは ☕

There is a moment, somewhere around N4, when you work out that "の is concrete, こと is abstract" is a description and not an instruction. 👀

It tells you what the two words mean. It has never once moved your hand.

So here is the thing that moves your hand. Three questions, asked in order. Stop at the first yes.

Know someone who stalls at that exact spot in the sentence? Send them this. Share this issue →

Three torii gateway forms receding, the nearest one standing open

Question one: is the verb catching it as it happens?

If your eyes, ears or hands are on the event while it is unfolding, you want の.

る・見える・く・聞こえる

つ・手伝てつだう・める・邪魔じゃまする

かれはしるのを見た。You watched the running happen. の. 💡

Now the part that matters more than the list, because this is where the usual version of this rule quietly breaks.

☝️ Chotto ちょっと

The test looks at the outer verb only. 富士山ふじさんを見たことがありますか has 見る sitting right there in plain view, and the answer is still こと, because the outer frame is 〜たことがある. The seeing is inside the box, not holding it.

And "as it unfolds" is not "in front of you". テニスコートがかわくのを部屋へやで待った is perfectly good の from another room entirely. You are pinned to the event finishing, not standing next to it. 🎯

A small box nested inside a larger box, clearly contained

One more: if what reached you was news rather than sound, question one does not fire. 彼が退職たいしょくしたことを聞いておどろいた. You did not hear him resign. You heard about it. こと. 👀

Question two: is the slot already locked?

Three kinds of lock. Any one of them and the answer is こと.

It sits before です as the thing you are equating. わたしゆめは日本ではたらくことです。

It is a frozen frame. ことができる · 〜たことがある · ことにする · ことになる。Learn these four as vocabulary, not as grammar.

The outer verb moves information or makes a commitment. はなす · つたえる · 約束やくそくする · める。

A caution on the first one, because the short version of this rule is too broad. の cannot be the B in an A は B だ equation. It can absolutely turn up before です doing other jobs: あかいのです is fine, and so is the explanatory のです. 📌

Question three: neither fired, so you are free

の in conversation, こと in writing. Genuinely stuck with nothing to go on? Say の. You will be right more often than not. 💪

⚠️ Abunai あぶない

Two places where "free" is a lie.

Clefts. If the shape is 〜のは plus a place, a time or a person, plus だ, then の is compulsory even in writing. まれたのは京都きょうとだ。Swap in こと and it is simply wrong.

わすれる and おもす. Here your choice is not register, it is meaning. かぎをかけるのを忘れた is I forgot to lock it. ったことを忘れた is I forgot that I went. Two different sentences. Pick by what you mean, not by how formal you feel. 😅

Why nobody handed you this earlier. Minna no Nihongo teaches 〜ことができます in Lesson 18, and does not introduce の as a nominalizer until Lesson 38. Twenty lessons apart. The teachers' manual for Lesson 38 even warns instructors to be ready for the question. So the curriculum knows the collision is coming, schedules it two years downstream, and hands your teacher the cleanup. It was never your fault for finding it murky. 📚

This Week's Japanese

Word of the Week

期待きたいNeutral, everyday

Means: expectation, or looking forward to something. Far more common in daily Japanese than "expectation" sounds in English. 🍵

Use it: 期待しています。あまり期待しないで。期待以上いじょうでした。

Kanji of the Week · 漢字

Meaning: to wait.

Reading to learn first: ま(つ). On'yomi is タイ, which is the one you meet in compounds.

Common words: 期待 expectation · 招待しょうたい invitation · 待合室まちあいしつ waiting room

Memory hint: the left side is the "going" radical, the right is てら. Movement held in place. That is waiting. ⚡

This week's connection: 待つ is question one's cleanest verb. バスがるのを待った. You are not watching an idea of a bus. You are pinned to an arrival that has not happened yet, and that pinning is exactly what の marks.

Renshuu Time 練習れんしゅう 📝

Ten sentences. Write の or こと, and write the number of the question that fired.

Score yourself on the number, not the word. Getting the right word by feel and the wrong number means the rule has not landed yet, and feel deserts you the moment a sentence gets long.

Starter, questions 1 to 4. となりの部屋でだれかがいている_が聞こえた。/ どもがみちわたる_を見ていた。/ バスが来る_を三十分さんじゅっぷんも待った。/ ははゆうごはんをつくる_を手伝った。

Standard, 5 to 8. 私の夢は日本で働く_です。/ あに中国語ちゅうごくごを話す_ができる。/ 富士山を見た_がありますか。/ 彼が会社かいしゃめた_を聞いて驚いた。

Challenge, 9 and 10. 毎朝まいあさ走る_にしました。/ 漢字かんじおぼえる_はむずかしい。

Answers next issue. Two of these are traps, and if you get them by feel you will not notice you were trapped.

✨ Yatta やった

You now have something the nuance explanation could never give you: an order of operations. Not a feeling about which word is more abstract, but a first question, a second question, and a default. 🙌

The tiny win

Ten minutes, and the stall in the middle of your sentence has a procedure attached to it now. That is worth more than knowing what both words mean, which you already did. 💪

One reply back

Hit reply with your score out of ten. Just the number.

We read every one, and if question two is where people are losing them, that tells us what to write next. 👀

Stay connected 🙌

We are around during the week if you want to talk shop, share a win, or just lurk. Both are completely fine.
